A famous jacket worn by the late British Princess Diana sold for $1.14 million at an auction held by Sotheby's in New York City, according to Vogue magazine.
The jacket is distinguished by its unique design, featuring a black sheep among rows of white sheep on a red background. The late princess wore it to a polo match in June 1981, when she was 19 years old, shortly after her engagement to Prince Charles, the current king.
In the last 15 minutes of the bidding war for the jacket, which is from the British brand "Warm & Wonderful," the price jumped from $190,000 to $1.1 million, or 14 times higher than the original estimate of $80,000.
Princess Diana later replaced the jacket that summer after it was damaged. The founders of "Warm & Wonderful," Joanna Osborne and Sally Muir, had lost track of the original, until Osborne discovered it in the attic of her home earlier this year.
The jacket has become one of the most iconic pieces of clothing from the late queen's personal style. In 2022, the company "Raising Blazers" released a reissue of the jacket to much fanfare, and "Warm & Wonderful" still sells it for $248.
